Added on 1/3/2008 - A new resource for this website called an "Educational Toolbox," which provides consumers, independent living counselors, therapists, and rehabilitation technology suppliers with the tools needed to teach others about wheelchair transportation safety. Added on 12/4/3007 - The PowerPoint presentations used to update our advisory board members on the progress made in each research task have been converted to pdf documents and added to the appropriate task within the research section.
The Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Access Board) is proposing to revise and update its accessibility guidelines for buses, over-the-road buses, and vans. The guidelines ensure that transportation vehicles are readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities. The guidelines apply to the acquisition of new, used, and remanufactured transportation vehicles, and the remanufacture of existing transportation vehicles to the extent required by regulations issued by the Department of Transportation pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act. The guidelines for transportation vehicles operated in fixed guideway systems (e.g., rapid rail, light rail, commuter rail, and intercity rail) will be revised and updated at a future date.

June 2008 - Two new wheelchair manufacturers show a different attitude! They are actually excited to announce that they have successfully crash tested their wheelchairs. These press releases reveal companies that recognize the value potential customers place on transportation safety and are actively using it in their advertising to suppliers and therapists.
June 2008 - Did you see this new item? A Los Angeles wheelchair user caught by a local TV station, KABC, asking the bus driver for securement of her wheelchair on a city bus. May 2009 - Now here is a grass roots web project well done: Kenny Cieplik and his Traveling Wheelchair. This website inspired by Kenny's desire to highlight wheelchair accessibility in his community shows real consumer activism in a Boston-area community. He has also assembled some good resources on wheelchair transportation safety at http://thetravelingwheelchair.com/wc-passenger-safety/ Following an automobile accident in May 2008, he and his mom got Senator Barney Frank involved and Kenny is now strongly advocating for Federal legislation to require wheelchair securement for wheelchair seated passengers. April 2009 - Did you see the news story about the "texting school bus driver" in San Antonio. You guessed it... he had an accident while transporting students who were riding seated in wheelchairs. Of course he got fired, but the bus surveillance video shows, that he did part of his job just right. The student's wheelchairs were properly secured and the occupants had appropriate safety belts properly in place. As incredible as it sounds... no one was hurt. October 2007 - Officials of the National Congress on School Transportation (NCST) announced revisions to the 2005 edition of National School Transportation Specifications and Procedures. It is available for download at on their website. The 2005 edition of the NCST manual was the result of the congress held that year in Warrensburg, MO. The next congress will be held in 2010.
