Education

Within the section of this website focused on Knowledge Translation, this is the section called "Education." As you can see under Education below, the education for this RERC WTS are focused on:

There is a critical need to effectively communicate with and educate the key stakeholders and constituents involved with transportation of individuals who use wheelchairs but do not transfer to the vehicle seat. This education is key to achieving the intermediate and long-term objectives of our RERC WTS.

In the January 2005 the State of the Science (SoS) meeting for Wheelchair Transportation Safety, the lack of knowledge about the existence and need for transportation safety technology standards and products was identified as the number one barrier! This barrier rated equally with the lack of understanding of basic principles of transportation safety and occupant protection. Educating key constituents was named as the highest-ranked strategy for improving motor-vehicle transportation for wheelchair users. It is also the basis for several of the other strategies, such as mandating the use of transportation safety technology (TST) products.

Everyone who works on this RERC on WTS is engaged in educating our key constituents:

  • consumers and their families

  • future rehabilitation scientists and rehabilitation practitioners

  • public and private insurers who pay for wheelchairs that meet the WC19 standard

  • transportation professionals

  • manufacturers of wheeled mobility and wheelchair securement products

  • developers of public transportation policy and those who design and implement safety regulations

Our education plan seeks to focus on the most effective tools for communicating and educating.  We are open to your suggestions and will work to meet your needs for locating educational resources, learning more and assisting you in teaching others.
